How rekeying actually works

Rekeying is the most misunderstood job in the trade, so start with what is physically happening inside the lock. A standard residential deadbolt or knob lock is a pin tumbler cylinder. Inside it is a rotating core called the plug, and above the plug sits a row of five or six vertical chambers. Each chamber holds two stacked pins: a spring-loaded driver pin on top and a shorter key pin underneath, resting on the keyway.

With no key inserted, the springs push the driver pins down so they straddle the boundary between the plug and the housing around it. That boundary is the shear line. As long as a driver pin crosses the shear line, the plug cannot rotate and the bolt cannot move. Insert the correct key and each cut on the blade lifts its key pin to exactly the height that puts the top of that pin flush with the shear line. Every gap lines up, nothing crosses the boundary, and the plug turns freely.

Rekeying means swapping the bottom key pins for a different set of heights, so that a different pattern of cuts is the one that lines up at the shear line. The lock body, the bolt, the strike, the finish, the screws — none of that changes. Only the small stack of pins inside the plug changes. That is why rekeying is fast, why it does not require touching the door, and why it leaves the hardware you already chose right where it is.

The mechanical sequence is short. The technician removes the cylinder from the door or, on many knob and lever sets, releases the plug retainer at the back of the assembly. The existing key goes in and turns the plug just past the shear line, which traps the driver pins and springs up in the housing so they do not spill. A follower — a solid cylinder the same diameter as the plug — slides in behind the plug as it is pushed out, holding those top pins and springs in place. The old key pins fall out. New key pins matched to the new key's bite pattern go in chamber by chamber, get checked against the new key, and the plug slides back in ahead of the follower. Reassemble, test, done.

Two details separate a clean rekey from a lock that starts failing in six months. The first is pin depth accuracy. Pins come in incremental sizes, and one that is a single increment off will still turn a fresh lock but will begin to bind as the springs weaken. The second is spring condition. Springs that have sat compressed for fifteen years in a humid coastal house do not recover, and a rekey performed on tired springs will stick no matter how correct the pinning is. A technician paying attention replaces them while the plug is already out.

What "rekey a lock cylinder" means when it is not a front door

The same principle reaches well past entry doors, but the internals differ. Many desks, cabinets, filing units, and older mailbox banks use wafer locks rather than pin tumbler cylinders. Instead of stacked pins, a wafer lock uses flat spring-loaded wafers that protrude out of the plug into a groove in the housing; the correct key pulls every wafer flush. Rekeying one means changing the wafer set, and those parts are far less standardized than residential pins. Some units are genuinely rekeyable and some are cheaper to replace outright, so knowing which is which before anything comes apart saves an afternoon.

Mortise cylinders, rim cylinders, and interchangeable core hardware are all rekeyable as well. Interchangeable cores are the friendliest of the group: a control key pulls the entire core out in one motion and a pre-pinned replacement drops straight in, which is why owners with frequent tenant turnover often ask for that hardware by name during an upgrade.

Can you rekey a lock yourself?

Sometimes, and it is worth being straight about when. Retail rekey kits exist for the most common residential brands. They supply a set of new pins and a small tool set for one manufacturer's keyway. If every exterior lock on the house is that brand and that keyway, if all of them currently work with their original keys, and if the goal is simply retiring a key that was handed out, a kit is a reasonable weekend project.

It stops being reasonable in four common situations. A kit cannot rekey a lock whose key is lost, because the plug has to be rotated to the shear line before it can be removed, and with no working key that means picking or drilling. A kit covers a single manufacturer, so a house with mixed hardware needs several kits or someone who carries loose pins in every depth. High-security cylinders with sidebars, telescoping pins, or restricted keyways are not kit-compatible at all. And a kit offers nothing at the most valuable part of the job, which is deciding whether that lock is worth keeping.

Which locks can be rekeyed, and which cannot

This is the question that decides whether a visit is a rekey or a hardware order, so it is worth answering by category rather than by brand. The rule underneath all of it is simple: a lock is rekeyable when the part that reads the key is a separate, serviceable set of pieces that can be exchanged. When the key-reading part is sealed, moulded in, or worn past tolerance, there is nothing to exchange.

One case sits across the line: a lock whose key is lost entirely. Every mechanism above is still rekeyable in principle, but the plug has to be rotated to the shear line before it can leave the housing, and with no key that means opening the lock first by some other means. This is not a question about cost. It is a question about which problem you actually have.

Two other triggers push toward replacement. One is standardization — matching four exterior doors across three different keyways under a single key sometimes requires new cylinders regardless. The other is a planned security upgrade. Moving to a heavier bolt, a reinforced strike, or a keyed-alike set is a hardware decision, and rekeying worn parts to postpone it just spends the money twice.

Keying alike: one key for every door on the property

Keying alike means pinning several cylinders to the same bitting so a single key operates all of them. It is the most-requested thing that people do not know the name of — the request usually arrives as "I have four keys on this ring and I want one."

It works when the cylinders share a keyway family, because the key blade has to physically enter every lock before its cuts matter. Front deadbolt, back deadbolt, garage entry door, and a padlock on the shed can all end up on one key when they accept the same blade profile. When they do not, the fix is not clever pinning, it is replacing the odd cylinders with ones that do accept the shared profile — which is why a keyed-alike request so often turns into a short hardware conversation. Getting a photo of each key and each keyway face before the visit usually settles it in advance.

The trade-off is worth stating plainly. One key for the whole property is a convenience and a real security decision at the same time: every copy of that key now opens everything. If a keyed-alike key goes missing, the whole set gets rekeyed, not one door. Households where a key travels in a work bag or gets handed to a house-sitter sometimes deliberately keep one door on its own bitting for that reason.

Master keying, honestly

Master keying lets one key open every door while each individual key opens only its own. Inside the cylinder that is achieved by adding a third piece to some chambers — a thin master wafer sandwiched between the key pin and the driver pin. That wafer creates a second place in the stack where a gap can land at the shear line, so two different key cuts satisfy that chamber instead of one.

The honest part is the trade-off, and it is not a small one. Every chamber given a master wafer multiplies the number of key combinations that will turn that plug, and the extra combinations are not all keys anyone deliberately cut — they are simply cuts the geometry now accepts. Adding more levels of hierarchy multiplies it further. A masterkeyed cylinder is therefore a somewhat easier cylinder to defeat than the same cylinder pinned to a single key, and a large system designed carelessly can end up with a lot more accidental keys in the world than its owner imagines. Set against that, a building where one person can actually get into every room without carrying forty keys is enormously more manageable, and manageability is itself a security property.

The practical rule: master key when there is a genuine hierarchy to express — a multi-unit building, a commercial suite, a property with staff who need different access — and have it designed once, deliberately, with the levels written down. Do not master key a three-door house. There is no hierarchy there to express, and keying alike gives the same convenience with none of the cost.

When to rekey: the moments that actually call for it

Rekeying answers exactly one question — who holds a key that turns this lock — so the moments worth acting on are the moments when that answer changed or became unknowable.

Construction keys on a new build, and why a new owner should still rekey

New construction has an obvious key-control problem: framers, electricians, plumbers, painters, inspectors, and a rotating cast of subcontractors all need to get in, for months, before there is an owner. Two answers exist and they are not equally good.

The better one is a construction keying feature built into the cylinder. Extra elements are staged in the pin chambers so that a builder key operates the lock during the build. The first time the owner's key is inserted and turned, those staged elements are permanently displaced — a small pin breaks off, or a ball bearing drops out of position — and from that instant the builder key no longer works. Nothing has to be dismantled and nobody has to be trusted to return anything. If a builder tells you the locks have this feature, turning your own key in every exterior door on day one is what activates it, so do that before you unpack.

The other answer, which is far more common on ordinary residential builds, is that the builder simply cut a stack of copies of one key and handed them around. Those copies are not tracked, they do not expire, and they do not come back.

Which means the sensible default for anyone taking possession of a new build is the same as for a resale: assume unknown copies exist, and rekey. It costs less than the alternative of being wrong, and unlike almost everything else on a closing checklist it takes under an hour and leaves no trace on the doors you just paid for.

How long a rekey takes, door by door

The honest answer is that the pinning is the fast part and everything around it is the variable part. Once a cylinder is out and open on a working surface, exchanging a set of key pins and testing the new key is short, careful, repetitive work — measured in minutes, not hours, for a standard residential cylinder.

What actually moves the total is the surrounding work. Getting the cylinder out of a mortise lock case takes longer than backing a deadbolt out of a bored door. A cylinder that has been sitting in humid air for a decade may need cleaning and new springs before it is worth pinning at all. Mixed keyways across a house mean some cylinders get swapped rather than re-pinned. Keying alike means every cylinder has to be present and finished before any of them can be signed off, because they all have to answer to the same key. And each door gets tested properly at the end — key in and out, bolt thrown and retracted, with the door standing open and then again with it closed against the frame, because a bolt that behaves on an open door and binds on a closed one is a strike alignment problem that has just been discovered at the right moment rather than the wrong one.

A house with a handful of sound, matching cylinders and keys in hand is a short visit. The same house with one seized cylinder, two keyways that do not match, and a garage door nobody has a key for is most of a morning. Both are called "a rekey" on the phone, which is precisely why the details above are worth having ready when you make the call.

What a locksmith needs in order to make a car key

Automotive work has two separate halves, and confusing them is why phone quotes seem to vary so wildly. The first half is mechanical: cutting a blade that physically operates the door and the ignition. The second half is electronic: convincing the vehicle's immobilizer that this new key is allowed to start the engine. A key can be perfectly cut and still not start the car.

Before either half begins, expect to prove the vehicle is yours. A locksmith who does not ask for identification plus registration or title matching that vehicle is not the one to hand your car to. With a working key in hand, duplication is straightforward. The blade gets copied, and if the key carries a chip the new one is programmed alongside the original. What a transponder key is, and why it costs what it costs

A transponder key carries a small glass or carbon chip inside the plastic head. The chip has no battery. When the key is in the ignition, a coil around the lock barrel emits a radio field, the chip draws its power out of that field, and it answers with an identifier. If the immobilizer module recognizes that identifier as one of its enrolled keys, it releases fuel and spark. If it does not, the engine cranks and dies, or never cranks at all. That is exactly why a cut-only copy from a hardware kiosk will open the doors and then go nowhere.

The price of that key is the sum of four things, and none of them is the metal. First, the blank has to match the vehicle's chip family, and on newer vehicles blanks are often serialized and single-use. Second, the cut has to be right: laser-cut sidewinder blades are milled rather than traced, on a different and more expensive machine than a standard duplicator. Third, the programming side runs on licensed software with ongoing subscription and per-vehicle coverage that has to be maintained rather than bought once. Fourth, the procedure takes time, and originating keys from nothing takes considerably more of it than adding a spare.

Which leads to the most useful sentence on this page: get the spare made while you still have a working key. Every part of the job is faster and cheaper when an original exists to copy from, and the most expensive automotive key is always the one ordered from the shoulder of a road.

Keypad locks versus smart deadbolts

These two get shelved together and they are not the same product. A keypad deadbolt is a mechanical lock with an electronic keypad bolted to it. Codes live inside the lock, it runs on batteries, and it talks to nothing. A smart deadbolt adds a radio — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a low-power mesh protocol — plus an app, remote access, and an activity log.

A keypad is the better answer when the goal is simply retiring the hidden spare key: nothing to lose, codes you can change yourself, and nothing to break when the internet does. It also holds the longer battery life of the two, because it spends most of its life asleep.

A smart deadbolt earns its extra complexity when someone genuinely needs the log or the remote grant — a rental turnover, a cleaner on a fixed schedule, a family member who needs a code that expires on its own. The costs are real. Batteries drain faster, firmware needs occasional attention, and a radio-dependent lock is one more thing that can go offline at an inconvenient hour.

Either way, the same rule holds. An electronic lock is only as good as the mechanical deadbolt underneath it and the doorframe behind it. Keep a keyed override cylinder or a tested backup way in, and never let the batteries run down to the point where the lock is warning you on every use.

Choosing a deadbolt grade, and the part everyone skips

Residential lock hardware is graded by ANSI/BHMA on a three-tier scale reflecting cycle testing and strike resistance. Grade 3 is the entry-level residential tier, Grade 2 is the middle, and Grade 1 is the heaviest tier, normally what commercial doors carry. For an exterior residential door, Grade 2 is a sensible floor, and Grade 1 is worth the difference on any door that is not visible from the street.

Past the grade stamp, look for a bolt that throws a full inch when fully extended, a hardened insert inside the bolt to resist cutting, and a solid collar around the cylinder that resists wrenching. Now the part everyone skips. The most common way an exterior door fails is not the lock at all. It is the strike plate. A deadbolt anchored into a thin strike held by three-quarter-inch screws is anchored into jamb trim and nothing else, and the whole assembly leaves the frame in one piece under a solid kick.
