Doors before gadgets

Walk every exterior door: does it close square, latch without lifting, and throw the deadbolt smoothly? Coastal humidity swells doors and misaligns strikes, and a deadbolt that only throws when you shove the door is a deadbolt you'll stop using by August.

The strike plate nobody looks at

Most doors are kicked in at the strike, not the lock. Replace builder short-screw strikes with reinforced plates anchored by 3-inch screws into the stud. It's the highest-value ten minutes in home security.

Sliders and windows

Patio sliders are the soft entry of every bay-country house — add a hookbolt lock or a track bar. Check window latches on ground floors, and remember that a screen enclosure is privacy, not security.

Salt air is an adversary

Within a mile of saltwater, hardware corrodes years early: springs weaken, finishes pit, keypads ghost. Choose coastal-rated finishes, rinse exterior hardware occasionally, and lubricate cylinders with a dry PTFE lube — not oil, which gums with grit.

Keys, codes, and people

Rekey at move-in, after any contractor project, and whenever a key goes missing. Rotate keypad codes when cleaners or guests change. Most residential compromise walks in with a key or a code someone forgot was outstanding — the human layer is the real perimeter.
