The plain metal blade
Pre-late-1990s vehicles use a simple cut blade — any competent shop duplicates them from a working key or originates them from the lock. Cheap to copy, cheap to lose.
Transponder (chip) keys
Most vehicles since the early 2000s hide an RFID chip in the key head. The blade may turn the ignition, but the car won't start unless the immobilizer recognizes the chip — which is why a hardware-store copy 'cranks but won't start.' Chips are cloned or programmed to the car.
Remotes and smart fobs
Remote-entry fobs add lock/unlock radio functions; proximity smart fobs go further, allowing push-button start while the fob rides in a pocket. Programming procedures vary wildly by make — some pair on-site in minutes, some require dealer-level tooling.
Laser-cut (sidewinder) keys
High-security blades milled with a center groove need specialized machines that big-box kiosks don't run. They resist picking and casual copying — and they cost accordingly when the only one goes swimming off a dock.

Know which type your vehicle uses before you lose it — it's the difference between a quick duplicate and an all-keys-lost job. And whatever the type: a spare made while a working key exists is drastically simpler than recovery after the last one is gone.
